Why Are Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Flights Cancelled and How Do You Find Out?
There is nothing quite like the anticipation of a Cappadocia hot air balloon flight. However, because this is an aviation activity, it is strictly governed by nature. As a local guide, I have seen many guests feel disappointed when a flight is grounded. But understanding why cancellations happen—and knowing how the system works—can completely remove the stress from your travel plans.
Here is exactly why flights get cancelled and how you will be notified.
1. The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority is in Control The most important thing to know is that individual balloon companies do not decide whether they fly or not. The decision is entirely controlled by the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority (SHGM). They monitor meteorological data around the clock. If they determine conditions are unsafe, they close the airspace for all operators. There are no exceptions, meaning you are always guaranteed the highest safety standards.
2. Wind Speed is the Deciding Factor You might wake up, look out your cave hotel window, and think the weather is perfectly calm and clear. However, hot air balloons are highly sensitive to wind, especially at higher altitudes. If wind speeds exceed the safe limit of 10 knots (around 11 mph), or if there are unpredictable thermal gusts, flights will be grounded. Rain, heavy snow, and dense fog also lead to immediate cancellations due to poor visibility.
3. The Traffic Light Flag System The Civil Aviation Authority uses a simple, transparent flag system to update flight statuses, which you can even check online:
- Green Flag: The weather is perfect, and flights are cleared for takeoff.
- Yellow Flag: Conditions are borderline. Flights are on standby, waiting for a weather update.
- Red Flag: The airspace is officially closed due to unsafe conditions. All flights are cancelled for the day.
4. How and When Will You Be Notified? You will not be left guessing. If you book through a professional local agency, communication is seamless. If the Civil Aviation Authority issues a Red Flag the day before, your operator will inform you immediately via message or through your hotel reception. If the weather is on a Yellow Flag standby, you might still be picked up and taken to the launch site. If it turns Red while you are waiting, the operators will safely transport you back to your hotel in time for breakfast.
Always Have a Backup Plan If your flight is cancelled, do not let it ruin your morning. You will always receive a full refund or be rescheduled to the next available day. This is exactly why I always advise booking your flight for your very first morning in Göreme. And remember, a windy morning is the perfect excuse to explore the deep tunnels of our underground cities or hike the silent, misty valleys before the crowds arrive.
